Greetings from GIYO Board President, Russ Marane
As this school year began, GIYO was finally able to plan for the return of normal activities for our Symphonette and Philharmonia students. Instruction and rehearsal activities are being carried out in a safe and compliant manner as outlined by the Glynn County School Board. Our students have responded enthusiastically to return as a group.
UPCOMING CONCERT: We plan to present our Winter Concert on Sunday, December 12 at Glynn Academy. Our orchestra is rehearsing the music to be presented and its members are excited to once again be able to perform for you. It promises to be an extraordinary concert and we look forward to seeing all of our parents, friends and supporters.
BOARD AND PERSONNEL CHANGES: The school year began with the retirement of several long-term board members. Ted and JoAnn Davis, founders of the Youth Orchestra program in 2004, left the board after 17 years to enjoy their retirement after devoting so much of their time to the development of young student musicians. Judy Stipp, who led our popular STRING-on! program in the elementary schools, also retired along with John Girton. Mary Katherine Sexton joined the board and is helping us with event planning activities.
We are also pleased to announce that Suzanne Morrison has been selected to manage all of the affairs and activities of GIYO as our General Manager. After many years managing the senior portion of the Youth Orchestra, now known as Philharmonia, we are fortunate to have her assume this important new role for our entire organization.
As the holiday season nears, the students and board of GIYO want to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving and a very Merry Christmas!
